Gymboree Today - My “Problem Solver”
July 30, 2008 by Amy Jo.
At Gymboree every Wednesday, Allison goes to a class for 3-5 year olds and Carter and I do a Level 4 class for 16-22 month olds. Gymboree says that kids Carter’s age are “problem solvers”. They are into figuring things out for themselves… climbing, putting bean bags through a hole, etc. So, let me tell you about my little problem solver…
Carter loves the basketball hoop at Gymboree that is just a little bit taller than he is. - He can get a ball in the basket most of the time and misses only occasionally. Next to the basketball hoop are two large bins full of balls. Carter takes a ball from one bin and puts it through the basketball hoop and goes back to the same bin to repeat the process. Meanwhile, Mommy retrieves all the balls and puts them into the other bin. This goes on until only 2 or 3 balls are left in the bin and Carter cannot reach them on his own. Then I direct him to the second bin (now full of balls I have retrieved) and he starts all over.
Well, today, Carter turned the almost empty bin upside down to get the final 2 or 3 balls out. He exclaimed, “Dump! Dump!” as he did it. He has finally solved a problem of how to get those last 2 or 3 balls out of the bin! How smart! And terribly cute, too.
